جبل أحد
Saturday 7 Shawwal 3 AH (23 March 625 CE), soon after the dawn prayer
The Quraysh came to avenge Badr and camped at the foot of 'Aynayn, a low hill on the salt flat of Qanat, turning their horses and camels loose in the Muslims' barley. The Prophet ﷺ spent the night at al-Shaykhan; at dawn he reached Uhud, prayed the dawn prayer in ranks with the enemy in sight, and drew up with the mountain at his back, facing Madinah, with 'Aynayn on his left. He set fifty archers on the hill under 'Abdullah b. Jubayr and told them not to leave it. This model shows the field at that moment, with no figures. The landform comes from elevation data; the hill is raised out of today's flood silt, and the wadi runs on its old course north of the hill. The date is disputed: al-Waqidi and Ibn Sa'd give 7 Shawwal, Ibn Ishaq the middle of the month. The hill's height, the wadi's line, the extent of the salt flat, the fields and the camp, and the towers of al-Shaykhan are estimates.
